Polar Cap flying...?

I was chatting with an airline pilot today and he told me the longest flight he’s ever flown was 16 hours, Incheon to CVG. I asked if that took him right over the Polar cap.

He said, “no, just south of Anchorage. And planes don’t fly over the Polar cap anymore without specific flight approvals. If anything happens it’s just too difficult and expensive to help them. So it’s been off limits for awhile.”

Is this correct?
