N505EX Extra 300L hits boat mast - crashes . . .

TAMPA, FL – Tampa Fire Rescue tells us that a small plane made a crash landing at Peter O. Knight airport after hitting a mast on a sailboat.

They say that the plane made the crash landing near the shipping channel at the south end of Davis Island. Fire Rescue tells us that 2 men were treated on the scene and taken to TGH.

The plane is an Extra 300 single engine craft.

According to fire rescue the plane was passing over the Port of Tampa, close to the airport, while flying over the shipping channel the plane hit the mast of a sailboat. Then the plane hit the seawall and flipped on airport property.

The Captain of the sailboat told ABC Action News that he heard a loud crash and felt a jolt on his boat. He saw the plane crash land on the airfield at Peter O’ Knight.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.

The pilot of the plane is Dan Greenwald, 48 years old, and the passenger is Mitch Kirby, 19 years old, both from the Tampa area.
