My usual pre-update nerves

My small farm of 4GB Pi 4’s running Buster 32-bit just soldier on doing their stuff and so I’ve been very loathe to change anything as they just work but I really need to spend a little time on my PiAware box that also feeds FR24, RadarBox and ADSBExchange.

Currently running;
RadarBox (rbfeeder 1.0.8)
FlightRadar24 (fr24feed 1.0.48-0)
FlightAware (piAware 8.2)
ADSBExhange (can’t remember if I run a specific feeder or piggyback from one of the above, Dump1090 or somewhere else.)

Sudo apt update returns the following;

pi@RaspberryPi-air:~ $ sudo apt update

Lots of Raspberry Pi OS updates that are long overdue but it seems to me there will be a problem when it comes to upgrade rbfeeder so I was wondering the best way to go about it and should it be done in any particular order? I have a hold on mlat-client from RadarBox because there is (was?) a bug where it couldn’t be restarted if it was stopped without rebooting it if I recall correctly and I was wondering if they ever got round to fixing the bug and whether it should still be on hold?

Is PiAware best updated via the web interface and if so before or after I have updated Raspberry Pi OS and the other feeders?

Also are the latest versions of PiAware, RBFeeder, FR24 still compatible with Buster after all this time?

I always clone to another SD Card before updating so I have something to fall back on if the worst happens but all my worry on last upgrades has come to nothing and everything usually just works.

I will probably replace this Pi4/AirNav with a Pi 5 and AirSpy R2 following release of Trixie later this year after giving a while for the dust to settle which fills me with horror as I have forgotten more than I knew in the first place which wasn’t much to begin with!

Appreciate any help/advice/tips you might like to share.

Thanks & kind regards,
-=Glyn=-

Thanks for the reply - again @abcd567 and I see @foxhunter took the time to reply when I asked the same question a year ago and you gave me the answer then sorry.

But just so I am clear I should be OK to update rbfeeder from v1.0.8 to 1.0.10 on Buster but as AirNav have not bothered to fix the repository issue shall I take it that they have not yet fixed their mlat-client as I have had that on hold for ages and still using the version I downloaded from you years ago!

Thanks & kind regards,

Well feeling brave enough to give it a go before I typed the gpg commands I issued a sudo apt update and got a whole bunch of errors this time! The AirNav Systems one you have already explained so I’m good with that, the rpimonitor @foxhunter explained a year ago in that other post but the raspbian error is a new one on me!

To complicate matters I am unable to clone the SD Card using SD Card Copier as it reports it is unable to mount the partition! I have tried another brand new SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB but get the same error.

No wonder I get nervous whenever I upgrade…if it fails I don’t think I would have the knowledge or confidence to start from scratch all over again.

I also don’t see the ‘Insert Code’ icon to paste the following in to;

Do NOT copy your old card. Save it for instant restoration of your system.
Use a spare card and install Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm using Raspberry PI Imager. After writing card, boot up Pi with new card, and install decoders, feeders, graphs etc. etc.

Raspberry Pi Imager Guide from Raspberry Pi Orgnization

With above Imager, you can set following while writing the Card with fresh OS image:

  1. Select OS (Bookworm, or Bullseye, 32-bit or 64-bit, Lite or Desktop etc). The imager will download your selected Image automatically, and write it to the microSD card.
  2. Set user name such as “pi” (or whatever you like), and user password
  3. Set host name like “RaspberryPi-air” (or whatever you like)
  4. Set WiFi-username and WiFi-password
  5. Enable SSH

Wow, so far over my head I think I almost got it!

GOAT!

Appreciate the suggestion abcd567 but we’ve been down this road before and I don’t want to try that for many reasons including but not limited to;

  1. I’m not sure I have the knowledge to setup a Pi from scratch these days let alone configure each & every app and wouldn’t want to burden this or any other forum with dozens of stupid questions and then repeat the procedure 5 or more times for all the other Pi’s!

  2. I currently have 6 x Pi4’s used for various purposes all set up identically so when I flit from one Pi to the other the OS/interface/apps/utilities etc. are all the same apart from the desktop wallpaper! At this time I would not want one to be different to the others. That might change later when Trixie comes out and I buy a Pi 5 but for now I’d rather they all stay the same. This for me is very much the easy way out.

  3. The system I have whereby I copy the working card to a backup before I update I have used for the last 5 years and it has served me very well. This way if the update fails (it rarely has but if it did and I couldn’t just plug the cloned card in and pick up from where I left off pre-update it would basically write the Pi off for me) I can always just take out the newly cloned card from the USB port and plug it into the micro SD Card slot and just carry on as before. Better the devil you know…

  4. See 1-3 above! :rofl:

Let me give you another example. I purchased a new Pi4 at a premium during COVID to be used as a weather station and used the card I keep in a vanilla Pi4 just changing the IP Address and machine name to get it up and running as a head start to save all that installation and configuration setup. However I discovered it was a newer revision that was incompatible with the NOOBS I used when I originally setup my first Pi and so it wouldn’t even boot. I did ask a few times on the Raspberry Pi forum if there was an easy way to remove NOOBS and go over to a basic Buster installation but it appears there wasn’t.

I even purchased a second Pi4 that was old stock hoping that might just be plug & play but it wasn’t either. Both Pi’s were put back in their boxes and are still there to this day because I didn’t/don’t want to start from scratch so I never got my weather station Pi.

It might be that I have no choice but to start from scratch but if that is the only way then I would only want to do this exercise once so would rather wait until later this year when Trixie is released so when (if) I do start afresh I am completely up to date and don’t have to update everything again for at least the next couple of years.

Someone with your knowledge would find it so very easy to do as you suggest whereas for someone like me it literally has to be avoided at all costs and only become the nuclear option if everything else fails.

I’d rather just keep it trucking along as is with all those updates pending rather than blaze a new path right now and then feel forced to update again when Trixie is released.

Hope you understand…

Thanks & kind regards,

If you don’t want to deal with the particularities of setting up all the different aggregators, take a look at this: https://discussions.flightaware.com/t/a-simple-way-to-feed-ads-b-data/90183

It’s as simple as setting the feed key for each aggregator in the webinterface.

Edit: you don’t need a pi5 to run the airspy, pi4 will do fine.
