Live ATC audio while tracking flights

It would be really cool to integrate liveatc.net so that you could listen to live atc audio for a flight your tracking. Would be neat to show which atc facility to be listening to based on aircraft location and then have a link to that atc facility. There are many atc facilitys listed on liveatc.net

There’s a delay on FlightAware of a few minutes. (Don’t believe me? Read the questions/answers at the top right of every page here.) LiveATC is live. In other words, when you hear something like “ABC123, cleared for takeoff”, you need to wait several minutes before you can see ABC123 on FlightAware.

You can open two browser windows or tabs and have ATC on one while FlightAware is on the other. In other words, there are, in my opinion, more important features that should be developed before ATC is integrated. Like, you know, maps that zoom.

My point to this is that it would be nice to be able to see on flightaware what atc facility a flight is currently on. Then use liveatc.net to listen to what is happening. You are correct that you can open two windows and view flightaware in one and liveatc.net in the other but would be nice to use flight aware to know what atc facility to be using though out the flight.

You can. It is usually on the track log. I just recently used it to know when to pull up PDX Approach when my wife was heading to Portland. From there, I listened to her all the way in until they were handed off to PDX Ground.

The only problem I can see is that this would work on the assumption that both departing and destination airports have a LiveATC feed, in which most cases, they do not. While (by law) we have access to the data comprising most flightplans (as they are published), LiveATC feeds are voluntary (based on someone putting up the feed on their own). It wouldn’t be right for it to be FA’s responsibility to look for a LiveATC feed, nor should it be LiveATC’s responsibility to look for a flight.

BL.

cool idea, but maybe just a link on the airport information page for towers that have feeds would be better

I think you should have an option to make it play or you could pause/stop it if you wanted. But it would be cool!

I have to listen to those damn ATC blowhards every time I go to work. I say no

Not to mention, on a 1.5 hour flight in a busy area, you will talk to tower, departure, departure, center, center, center, approach, approach, approach, approach, tower…

Who could keep track of all those frequencies? Pilots have a hard enough time doing it. Just monitor 121.5 for all the missed calls.

I’m with flyboy, it’s really uninteresting to hear “NXX checking on flight level 370,” “Roger, NXX at 370”

flyboy get’s to hear this “Lifeguard NXX cleared direct destination” I don’t want to hear that, it’ll just make me jealous!

Lately I’ve had to get in line coming into South Florida. Heading into FXE I’ve been vectored way west waiting for some bozo on a 5 mile final doing 80kts

It’s more frustrating than cool. I’ve listened to LiveATC while viewing the airport’s FlightAware page. Due to the delay (see questions/answers, it was not that fun trying to match up the flight (delayed time) on the page with the ATC (no noticeable delay).

See the second entry in this forum for my discussion on how to listen to ATC and watch the page at the same time.

There is a audio delay on most if not all LiveATC feeds varying from 10-45 seconds as the feed is sent via DarkIce from most volunteers to the server then disturbed out via Icecast to listeners.

Yeah, what did you do to those CitationShares guys anyway?!?

I knew there was a delay but I thought it was only a couple of seconds - not enough to worry about.

Thanks for the letting me know it is more than that.
