islepilot sent me a link to a video thats good but it also says to install an ntp client, and something called base station. the video is for an install of mode S Beast, so I’m not sure if I need those. Is anything needed other than Plane plotter and rtl1090??

thanks again for all of your help, Keith, RRKen, and you.

Dan

Hi Dan722

As I said previously many US flights don’t show their positions but with the Multilateration system their locations can be plotted on the Planeplotter chart if there are enough sharers in your area sending raw data.
For this you need very accurate timing which can only be provided if you use Meinberg NTP.
Nic Storey has provided a video to set up the dongle with RTL 1090 software nicstorey.co.uk/planeplotter … %20Started

Basestation is an aircraft database that gives you a means of tying up registration nos (tail nos) to hex codes broadcast by ADS-B. A populated version can be obtained here:

Richard, I finally have everything up and sending data. on my 4th day. Still working on a better antenna and finding a way to get it outside and up higher.

thanks for your help. Dan

Hey guys quick question.

How did you get the orange outline for your max distance in PP like the chart picture a couple posts up in the thread? Still learning PP. Thanks for your help in advance!

Mark

The orange line in my plots is a theoretical maximum range that I computed using software called GlobalMapper. I pull in data from the National Elevation Dataset and the software computes the visibility from my antenna height (30 feet AGL) to a target (38,000 MSL in this case).

Keith

Thanks Keith!

Mark,

There is an older program called SBSplotter that will connect to a BS port (normally 30003) in RTL1090 or PlanePlotter that will draw out the limits of your reception and create a .out file that you can bring into PP.

Read about it here: http://www.hamradioscience.com/rtl2832u-ads-b-performance-testing/

One item that I have used the software to notice (although it doesn’t help me fix it) is that when I connect SBSplotter directly to RTL1090 I tend to get more junk data plotted in areas I don’t believe I can get reception. These targets don’t ever get plotted in PlanePlotter, so PP must be doing some extra filtering (the FEC setting in RTL1090 is off and I have tried both ways in PP, so I don’t think it is a FEC issue).

Interesting stuff. I did terrain analysis for several years for FEMA’s flood plain map updates. I’ve heard of Bluemarble software but never tried the product. We had ESRI stuff. either way lots of big bucks. we used LiDAR. Makes nice DEM’s when it’s accurate. 1 or 2 points off and a real disaster. the provider was not big on QA/QC. that’s what you get for lowest bid buying.

Can you describe your preamp/injector set up? I’ve looked all over for something I could buy, I’m not a home brewer for many reasons, but can find nothing. If you can describe what you did, I know of a local place that might build it.

thanks Keith
