Announcing the release of PiAware 6

Successfully installed the Piaware 6 and enabled the autogain option in the config file. However, I checked the autogain log (from wiedehopf’s automatic gain optimization which I installed previously) and it seems that it is still installed. Will it interfere with the new Piaware 6 autogain option? Should it be removed?

To upgrade an existing PiAware, visit your My ADS-B Stats Page , click the gray gear icon, and send the “Upgrade and Restart PiAware” Device Command.

I don’t see any such command when I go to that web page and click on the gray gear icon. Can I not upgrade my FlightFeeder?

I have tried to upgrade from 5.0 but am getting nowhere, except loads of error messages:

Any help would be appreciated.

Graham

This is a PiAware release, so no. We are working on a corresponding FlightFeeder release. It should be ready in a month or so.

Thanks for the clarification!

Hello Graham.

Try step 1 2 and 3 in this excellent post by abcd567.
This will reinstall straight from the sourcecode and fix the dependencies that seem to be missing at the moment.

CAUTION: Do NOT use these scripts on Piaware SD Card image. It will break your installation.

well I did that and after 5 mins of stuff scrolling by now I cannot putty/ssh to my pi

did it end with the statement reboot computer ?
If so power it off and on again and try again.
When done can you ping the Pi !?

It did 3 times I think in red  So I went to the gui and restared
Power cycle and I am back in thouhg on the json page I do not see adaptive
will keep fingering

This way too complicated for a point and click windows user. Seems like I had to do something years ago to enable ssh. There should be 2 images one for enabled and one not or point it out from the start.
And then i have to hunt for username and password pi/flightaware for putty
cut and paste
ctrl O
Thanks for your quick reply !!
Grey

Hey Grey, good to hear it’s fixed.

You have to enable the adaptive gain manually.
Edit the config file by typing the follwoing command
sudo nano /etc/default/dump1090-fa

change the parameter adaptive dynamic range from no to yes
save the file via Ctrl+x and hitting enter
restart dump1090-fa by using the following command
sudo systemctl restart dump1090-fa

then you will see the adaptive gain in the json page at the bottom
Adaptive gain is disabled for existing installations and enabled for new installations by default

Oh and with the latest version of Rapsbian you can enable ssh prior to boot when imaging an new card

yea, but I get this will be overwritten thing. It tried to find config.txt from putty but no luck

# Generated automatically by /usr/lib/piaware-support/generate-receiver-config

Seems you are using an Piaware image and not a package install :innocent:

then edit the following file

Sudo nano piaware-config.txt

cap Sudo does not work
I have tried many variations of sudo nano piaware-config.tx /etc /etc/default and I keep getting new file
yes this is the simplest option/install I have for a pi

Perhaps I need to quit trying to adapt and open etcher

I think my device might have the headless image on it. Do I need to reinstall the LCD one for that LCD screen to work or does upgrading to 6.0 on the status page work? Mine is the SD card version.

You’ll need to reinstall the LCD image if you have the supported LCD screen. You can reclaim your existing site on it.

Ver 6.0 - Comments at start of file /etc/default/dump1090-fa

The SD card image comment says that the config file will be over-written on reboot, that means any user made changes will be lost at reboot.

However there is no such restriction in the package install.

SD card image

# Generated automatically by /usr/lib/piaware-support/generate-receiver-config
# This file will be overwritten on reboot.
ENABLED=yes
... ... ...
... ... ...

Package install

# dump1090-fa configuration
# This is sourced by /usr/share/dump1090-fa/start-dump1090-fa as a
# shellscript fragment.
# dump1090-fa won't automatically start unless ENABLED=yes

ENABLED=yes
... ... ...
... ... ...

So you are saying if we follow these instruction we cannot enable the highly promoted adaptive gain?

The “burst” adaptive gain mode seems to be temporary? It says it will be overwritten on reboot.
GNU nano 2.7.4 File: /etc/default/dump1090-fa

Generated automatically by /usr/lib/piaware-support/generate-receiver-config

This file will be overwritten on reboot.

Can you please pin-point on the page you have linked, the exact steps / parameters / commands to setup Adaptive gain?

My Pi3 is not seeing any Aircraft. So, yes it 's broken. See Log.

Thanks in advance.
