why do planes go so far west enroute from ATL to CHO? I see the flight goes north-west and then east, but it looks like a much more direct route is possible from ATL to CHO just flying straight northeast. Thanks

It all depends on which direction the aircraft takes off into. I did see a few flights that went the straight way from ATL to CHO.

thanks for your prompt response. You mean the direction of the runway? I looked at a Delta flight 5055 leaving ATL 7:10 pm later today, so it hasn’t even left yet, but it’s flight plan goes northwest and then east.

Do you mean CHA (chattanooga) ?

There are commercial flights betwen CHO and ATL. CHA is more north of ATL than CHO.

ATL departures go N, S, E and W. Arrivals are from the NE, SE, SW and NW. (more or less)
