Null Web Client Response for a Tail Number

Hi, I’m getting a null response from the API when I pass it a specific tail number, but I can see the flight when I put that same tail number into your website.

Here is the request XML

<flig:FlightInfoRequest xmlns:flig=“http://flightxml.flightaware.com/soap/FlightXML2” xmlns:xsi=“http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance” xsi:type=“flig:FlightInfoRequest”>
flig:identB-2730</flig:ident>
flig:howMany1</flig:howMany>
</flig:FlightInfoRequest>

response…

INFO [FLIGHT_INFO_0] - Web Service Client response:
null

I do see this flight has just arrived on your main website: flightaware.com/live/flight/CHH7975

Any ideas?

as a follow up, I do get a response when I pass it the flight number that I can see from the main website.

<flig:FlightInfoRequest xsi:type=“flig:FlightInfoRequest” xmlns:flig=“http://flightxml.flightaware.com/soap/FlightXML2” xmlns:xsi=“http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance”>
flig:identCHH7975</flig:ident>
flig:howMany1</flig:howMany>
</flig:FlightInfoRequest>

Response looks good:

<FlightXML2:FlightInfoResults xmlns:FlightXML2=“http://flightxml.flightaware.com/soap/FlightXML2”>FlightXML2:FlightInfoResultFlightXML2:next_offset1</FlightXML2:next_offset>FlightXML2:flightsFlightXML2:identCHH7975</FlightXML2:ident>FlightXML2:aircrafttype787</FlightXML2:aircrafttype>FlightXML2:filed_ete12:40:00</FlightXML2:filed_ete>FlightXML2:filed_time1440310200</FlightXML2:filed_time>FlightXML2:filed_departuretime1440483000</FlightXML2:filed_departuretime>FlightXML2:filed_airspeed_kts440</FlightXML2:filed_airspeed_kts>FlightXML2:filed_airspeed_mach</FlightXML2:filed_airspeed_mach>FlightXML2:filed_altitude0</FlightXML2:filed_altitude>FlightXML2:route</FlightXML2:route>FlightXML2:actualdeparturetime0</FlightXML2:actualdeparturetime>FlightXML2:estimatedarrivaltime1440529200</FlightXML2:estimatedarrivaltime>FlightXML2:actualarrivaltime0</FlightXML2:actualarrivaltime>FlightXML2:diverted</FlightXML2:diverted>FlightXML2:originZBAA</FlightXML2:origin>FlightXML2:destinationCYYZ</FlightXML2:destination>FlightXML2:originNameBeijing Capital Int’l</FlightXML2:originName>FlightXML2:originCityBeijing</FlightXML2:originCity>FlightXML2:destinationNameToronto Pearson Int’l</FlightXML2:destinationName>FlightXML2:destinationCityToronto, Ontario</FlightXML2:destinationCity></FlightXML2:flights></FlightXML2:FlightInfoResult></FlightXML2:FlightInfoResults>

Is there any way to verify the tail numbers stored in the system that supports the API?

Thanks!

That particular tail number has not operated a tracked flight since July 29, 2015 (3 weeks ago) as you can see on our website: flightaware.com/live/flight/B2730

Remember that FlightXML only returns recent flight history (generally less then 2 weeks ago).

I don’t think that’s right though? when I put that tail number into your website it showed a flight number that had only landed an hour ago. Also, when I ran the same query again a few hours later it picked it up that time without error. So I don’t think it was an issue of not having flight history, more with the lookup on the tail number?

We get a flight utilization file directly from Boeing that has this tail number flying a short flight (2hrs approx) every day from Aug 1, 2015 to Aug 22, 2015. That would be within the three week window.

It’s tough to really tell from your website though because it immediately translates the B-2730 tail number to the CHH7975 flight number and then shows me the history for that flight number, not the tail number. And the tail number is not listed on the web page for any of the flight history either, so difficult to tell.

Is there anything on your website that lets me look at the history of a tail number and not the flight number (since they swap planes between routes)? From what I can tell this tail number stopped flying the long haul route on July 27th, so it wouldn’t be this flight number anymore, unless they switched back (we only have data through Aug 22 currently).

Let me know thanks - the tail number is definitely active and has been for the last three weeks approximately one time per day.

actually sorry - skimmed over your first sentence with the link.

ok, the information is off somewhere. We’re showing, per boeing, that flight is flying an approximate 2hr flight each day, but flight aware has a different history which is right around the time Boeing is showing it switching from a long haul to a short haul flight.

I’ll confirm with Boeing and then circle back around…could be an issue with their data also.

thanks!

Tail number information is frequently but not always provided to us for flights that operate using an airline identifier and flight number. It should not be assumed that flight results for a tail number will necessarily be complete in such situations.
