My Flightaware antenna doesn't function

Sorry. i have sma connector

So the cable is still the most likely culprit to me.
Where did you buy it, do you have a link?

i use only this pigtail https://www.amazon.it/Blizim-Convertitore-Adattatore-Connettore-Maschio/dp/B07Z5SRRMP/ref=sr_1_6?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=sma+n+maschio&qid=1579795552&sr=8-6

That looks like the right cable, have you checked if they shipped you the correct one?

Also do you have a photo of how you installed your antenna?

That’s a two pack, have you tried the spare?
(I’ve had cheap pigtails fall apart before use, so it’s worth checking it’s not open or shorted)

Yes, i tried it now.
i don’t have any photo, and it looks the right cable

Unscrew the N plug a turn or two, and see if it makes a difference.

I’ve just bought rtl-blog lna, and it functions, and it works but I don’t see more than 50 km, as before …

Apparently it doesn’t. That scan is not how it should look.

Either people somehow destroy them before using them for the first time or they ship bad units much more often than they should.

Do you have a photo or description of your setup?
Maybe it’s not quite wired right (would expect a different scan though … this really looks like a bad unit.)

Which receiver/s are you using?
How are you powering the amp

  1. nooelec smartee v2
  2. with bias-tee

flightaware antenna, pigtail, rtl sdr blog lna, nooelec smartee v2, raspberry pi4.

For comparison, can you remove only the LNA and see if reception improves?
That would be a very clear sign that you should contact your seller and get a replacement rtl-sdr LNA (almost certain you have a defective unit).

I’m really getting annoyed. I originally purchased thishttps://www.amazon.it/Portatile-Ricevente-Sintonizzatore-RTL2832U-Sostegno/dp/B013Q94CT6/ref=sr_1_15?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=chiavetta+dvb&qid=1580577603&sr=8-15 for less than $ 17. Then since I wanted to have a greater range I took nooelec v2 and the flightaware antenna.
By connecting the antenna I had a lower range than I had with only nooelec.
At this point I was told that it could be that an lna would improve significantly because it could be that the antenna had even more interference than the standard one of the nooelec bundle but apparently it is not so. Without the lna the reception doesn’t improve.

Can you check all coax junctions that there is a pin on the one side and no pin on the other?
Sometimes people accidentally get RP-SMA connectors.

I’d expect decent reception with the FA antenna and the smartee, 100 nmi at least at gain -10.
(given that the terrain is not the issue)

Maybe the pigtail you got is just defective …
Providing links of what exactly you bought can be helpful.

pigtail

nooelec

antenna

All looks quite good.
I’d expect decent performance without the LNA.

Running out of ideas.
Have you looked at the theoretical range? What is the Maximum Range I can Get?

Check for voltage issues maybe:

bash -c "$(wget -nv -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiedehopf/adsb-scripts/master/throttled.sh)"

Pretty much no matter what the LNA should improve the state without the LNA.

Edit: good catch @Dxista

Please note that the link you provided for the NooElec stick is not for the smartee, the one with built-in bias-tee.

If you actually purchased the one in the link, your LNA has no power.

yes sorry, I got the wrong link.

Yes, and the maximum range is about 400 kilometers.

With what i’ve seen i’d recommend you get a replacement for the rtl-sdr LNA.
The spectrum scan looks to me like the LNA is defective.

Regardless, even without the LNA you should have better reception with the FA antenna.
It would really help to have a photo of how you are mounting the antenna.
What would also be relevant: Can you see the horizon out of your window or is another building blocking your view?
That could limit the range as well.
Otherwise i’d suspect either the antenna (unlikely) or the pigtails (also unlikely) to be defective.
It’s really hard to troubleshoot such issues without having components you can compare to.
