An interesting range of experiences here with that dongle.
I bought two when they were very cheap.
Mine did run hot, so I popped the top of the case off and ran with the PCB exposed.
They performed very well for 12~18 months and then they didn’t - both failed 
No electrolytics to change on these boards - as far as I can tell, all the caps are ceramic.
Inspired - I just had a look at one, and all six joints on the USB connector are fractured.
I’ll give it some love tomorrow and see how it goes.
