Big increase in msg/s after updating old Piaware, not Dump1090 - makes no sense

Please read this sentence first and carefully: I am running Dump1090 standalone, and have not updated it after updating it to 7.2 from 3.7.2 last year.

Last week I updated Piaware, the FlightAware feeder, which I run in a Docker container, from version 3.7.2 to 8.2. It is compiled without Dump1090. What happened? My messages per second in Dump1090, which is the input of Piaware, and thus a step before, increased by ~70%.

Why? How is this possible?

Accidentally discovered the cause. Connecting Radarbox (version should be about a year old) as beast apparently creates some kind of loop. Does not make sense to me but connecting as raw (thus other Dump1090 port) gives the message rate from before.

It’s possibly that the radarbox client is requesting mode A/C data over the Beast connection; dump1090 will respond by enabling the mode A/C decoder, which will increase the apparent message count.

there’s some command line options to dump1090 to control that behaviour.
