Announcing the release of PiAware 6

The streak is for me the most unimportant thing on all that feeding stuff

Great updates! Keep up the good work!

I guess I need the back of my hand slapped…

When I built this system a couple years ago I use dump1090-mutability because I read that others were having trouble getting dump1090-fa to correctly feed. (my bad)

So, after getting the receiver to talk to Site Configuration on the Flightaware ADS-B Stats page I realized that I had dump1090-mutability:
[2021-09-21 09:13 PDT] 447898 msgs recv’d from dump1090-mutabi (4416 in last 5m); 447898 msgs sent to FlightAware
[2021-09-21 09:18 PDT] 452909 msgs recv’d from dump1090-mutabi (5011 in last 5m); 452909 msgs sent to FlightAware

So, it it possible to update PiAware while running dump1090-Mutability or do I need to burn the whole receiver and start over?

Thanks,
Eric

have you tried uninstalling mutability and install dump1090-fa?

Which operating system are you using?

Yes, it is possible and OK to upgrade piaware only while running dump1090-mutability.

However you will loose the benefit of Adaptive Gain which is not available in dump1090-mutabilty.

As your OS is an old one (Stretch), I recommend to write on a spare microSD card latest PiAware SD Card image which is Raspian Buster based. It will have everything latest version. You can slip out old microSD card, slip in the freshly written spare microSD card, and you are upgraded.

Ok. So, it’s unimportant to you. Apparently it’s not unimportant to the person you responded so disdainfully to, or they wouldn’t have asked.

FA chose to “gamify” the feeding process - probably because humans seem to be inherently competitive. I am guessing that in many cases, the standings pages and the feeding streak motivates people to maintain/improve their feed. Heck, there’s a whole thread on here about who has the longest streak.

I actually don’t really care about the streak either, but I do think that it is unfair to kick someone out of the “competition” due to a clear and acknowledged mistake by FA.

The whole feeding is unimportant. It’s a hobby.

Hi all
just a little update i cannot do on stats page

Feeder Type: PiAware (Debian Package Add-on) 6.0

skyaware 6.0 - dev

update to 6.1
thankyou

Yes, it was not our/mine fault - I thought they were more fair to their supporters.

The important thing is: I care about my feeder that it always sends reliable data to the pool 24/365. For me it shows that reliability is unwanted here.

The reliability starts with your device. How did you implement fault tolerance of the device? What about your internet connection? Is this reliable? Any SLA?

Longest streak of +1094 days wasn’t reliable enough ?

Stupid arguments for a software bug caused by FA.

Hi. Please DM me and let’s see what we can do to make this better.

Thanks for all the assistance. I guess I’ll wait and just re-build the entire system in a couple of weeks where I can get up to the site. I just hope I’ll be able to get the other feeders to work when I re-install dump1090-fa during the process.

What I should really do is combine the UAT FlightFeeder (from FlightAware) with my 1090 Mode-S RaspberryPi receiver I built. Then feed both using Dump1090-fa. Although the biggest hangup will be an antenna that has a wide enough bandwidth to cover both 978 and 1090MHZ but has good gain to take advantage of the elevation at the site. I don’t like the idea of a splitter (which would cost me 3db in signal) but I might be able to get that back by using decent feedline (1/2" hardline) and a good gain antenna. I want to continue the 978UAT reception. I know there is a gap in coverage because not many people choose to cover that frequency. When my UAT receiver goes down there is a big hole in the data captured in this area and displayed on the maps.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, thanks again to everyone that responded…

Eric

You know how often my device was down for several hours without losing the streak e.g. lost network or simply reinstall? It allows almost a day of outage, that’s not an evidence of reliability.

The dump1090-fa is not reauired to combine or receive data from dump978. The piaware connects to both dump1090-fa and dump978-fa directly (in fact through its helpers faup1090 and faup978).

If piaware, dump1090-fa and dump978-fa are on same RPi, then piaware’s default settings apply which are as follows:

dump1090-fa

receiver-type rtlsdr
receiver-host 127.0.0.1
receiver-port 30005

dump978-fa

uat-receiver-type sdr
uat-receiver-host 127.0.0.1
uat-receiver-port 30978

If the computer/RPi/Flighfeeder hosting dump978 or dump1090 is different from the computer running piaware data feeder (but on the same local network LAN), then replace 127.0.0.1 by local ip of computer running dump1090 or dump978.

Why are you pounding on this? A user installed the software provided by FA and fed reliably for 3+ years. Then that user installed an update also provided by FA, which in certain cases prevented part of the software from starting. An update to fix the bug was made available more than 24h later.

In hindsight, should the user have tested the update on a non-production device? Probably/maybe.
Should they have made a backup before performing the update? Probably/maybe.
Should FA have tested better and/or not released a version containing a fatal bug? I’d say definitely.

While you are up there on your high horse, would you mind holding my antenna? I could use the extra range.

Please don’t convert/feed 978 as 1090; piaware will directly consume 978 data, and converting to 1090 causes data quality problems.

(Also, if the data source is already a FlightFeeder, it’s already being fed to FA, you don’t need to feed it a second time and in fact we’d prefer if you didn’t)

No i would not. I have to hold my own antenna. Sorry, you need to find someone else.

Where do I add “–no-fix-df” in the dump1090-fa file?

Hi,
Can anyone please share the link (path) to the latest PiAware 6.1 image. I have a custom setup and need only the PiAware installer for manual install and configure.

Go to https://flightaware.com/adsb/stats/user/
Note: I cannot use the Settings > upgrade and reboot option
