I am a retired Master Mariner and host both a MarineTraffic.com AIS station for uploading marine vessels and a FlightAware station for aircraft. I do this primarily as a hobby and service to associates, friends and family who do not have access to a computer or smart phone or are not able to use this technology to track the movement of vessels or aircraft that they have an interest in. I am also of the opinion that it should be compulsory for all vessels and aircraft to transmit their positions in order that their presence be known to anyone. Primarily for assistance with SAR incidents and collision avoidance. Of course, security is an issue and should be considered when aircraft or vessels may stop transmitting their presence. It should however not be used as an excuse for companies, governments or any other entity to use when they are engaged in dodgy, illicit or criminal activity.
