Why Do?

Why do some airplanes just disappear if I am following them? Well it happens other times too.But there was one that was right close to where my residence is, so I was having fun tracking it. I could hear it so it made it that much more enjoyable–I do not know if there is a delay on this thing or nor… Then Boom it went stealth on me?

Why? And do they know someone on the ground is tracking them?

All my days as a cop… I never got one iota of any of this training. I do not know the least about it—Except it is probably one of the most magical man made experiences in life…

Sorry The MS makes me babble----I do believe I did have a point and a question too.

Thanks…

Yes, the TSA or CIA or KGB says data is to be delayed about 6 minutes.

To show here the aircraft must be;

  1. not military
  2. not blocked by the owner
  3. have an ATC assigned transponder code which means either on an IFR flight or receiving VFR advisories from the appropriate ATC facility.

Aircraft that you are watching that disappear would normally mean they either canceled the IFR flight plan or terminated VFR advisories and changed the transponder to the generic VFR code. The other times I’ve noticed them disappearing is when control over the aircraft changes from an enroute center to a local approach control facility. For some reason some disappear and some don’t.

There is no way to know if you are being tracked by someone other than ATC but you can assume that you are if you meet the above requirements.

Sometimes you go missing

And get spit out the next day.

flightaware.com/live/flight/N101 … /KONT/KONT

but usually only north of Vegas.

Don’t you just hate it when the airplane just keeps taking you back to somewhere like Ontario…? Have you been staying at the Hotel California?

John

I’m just a dumb Cop I couldn’t follow it. I bet it was…Is … Funny.

I was just giving him a bad time about ending up in a garden spot (not) like Ontario. Hotel California is an old song, one of the lines is …you can’t check out.
He flies an airplane that is used for some sort of aerial survey work.
They end up all over the place.

For something else to do try www.liveatc.net they have some live feeds of various ATC facilities. I’m overseas and like to listen to the tower in my home town while watching the action on flight aware.

Don’t feel bad. My ADD put the following in my head when I read your subject…

“Why do” birds, suddenly appear, every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be, close to you…

OK, now that I have opened that can of worms (what the hell was I thinking???)…have at it boys.

Dibs on calling it the official FA song for Satine though!

I am like a kid in a candy store!! You folks are so skilled and so blessed to do what it is you do. You have 110% of my admiration!

We picked Ontario because it’s such a fun place with a lot activity to keep us entertained on the nights we don’t fly. We also enjoy wasting 1.5 hrs of fuel getting to & from the OA. Could you imagine how terrible it would be if we were in Vegas with every other night off, max performance climbs to mission altitude & high penetration descents to the airport from F340 & 34nm. Ontario is way better :unamused:

Staying at the hotel CA - Coffee/$3.00 per cup & beer $6.00 a bottle :exclamation:

lol, I hate those max performance climbs and descents. No fun at all… Kind of like doing 300 to the OM. :open_mouth:
roger on the costs. No doubt you’re saving a lot of money in Ontario. Next time stay in Barstow. It would be a good compromise…cough.

ontario, riverside, san berdoo would call that the armpit, not the garden spot. i tried to listen to liveatc.com and follow flights in sea, and the six minute delay really messed me up, so i quit doing both at the same time.

I CAN FINALLY SAY IT!! YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!! Bakersfield is the armpit of California.

Hey now, Satine might get upset with you for that!

I was in Taft last week, made Bakersfield look pretty nice. So nice I drove 40 miles to Bakersfield and spent the night returning the Taft the next day.

Is that OM above 10000 ft?

Nope, we can usually get the speed limit waived over here.

Born and raised in the Bakersfield area. Just stating fact, definitely NOT bragging.

Granted, I am lumping Buttonwillow, Taft, Wasco, Shafter, Maricopa, and Arvin all in with Bakersfield, but sill, that whole area is the armpit of California. It actually starts around the Delano, McFarland area, and heads south to the Grapevine…

arent there two armpits in california, the inland empire, and bakersfield?? :stuck_out_tongue: :open_mouth:

Nope. Bakersfield and Hayward (in the SF area)

I used to have a job where I got to fly into Taft regularly. At least those backwater oil towns have at least one good restaurant.
