Yes. Straight lines only look good on flat Mercator projection maps. List of map projections - Wikipedia
Try it yourself on a globe. Take a string and stretch it to the endpoints. Look carefully at how the lines travel. Is this a huge difference? Not really, though it does save gas. Even ships at sea use the same rules.
