So, you did save it after all.
I can see why. The day of outage you need to avoid is in GMT, not your local time. 5pm Sunday PST was 01:00 GMT on Monday so you were ok for the rest of Monday.(GMT) which took you to 4pm Monday PST. You then got more reports at 8am Tuesday PST, which was 16:00 Tuesday GMT so that saved you again. Aren’t different time zones wonderful :thinking:

My first setup passing 2900 days today on the day that I’m featured in the FA newsletter and the upcoming blog.

Everyone in this thread is looking to streak of their feeders. I am not. I am more interested in the real thing: our own streak. 60+, 70+, 80+, 90+ or even 100+ ? :wink:

I just noticed I joined this site 11 years ago today. Seems like yesterday. Streak is only 6.7 years so far though as there was a period my receiver was down.

Dodged another bullet this weekend! I can’t figure out why stuff like this only happens when I am out of town…

Had my Pi plugged into a “smart plug” so that I could power cycle it remotely if it wedged, and that has been fine for a year or so. Take off on a nice long weekend with the wife and the plug decides to fail to power off. Got my son to drive 20 miles to my house and help me troubleshoot remotely - while I am participating in a bowling tournament and can only devote time in about 3 minute increments.

He was able to eliminate the smart plug and hook it straight to a power strip, but not before it was offline for 32 hours. Grateful for the use of UTC time and the fuzzy concept of “day” that they use.

Streak still alive at almost 2,400 days.

Sounds like it’s time for a serious backup power supply unit. Cyber Power makes some nice reliable units. I have been using their products for a lot of years on computers and most certainly my Flight aware RPi system.

It’s on a 1500 watt APS battery backup, it would probably run for a week or more if the house power was out that long - though if the house power was out, internet and my other supporting infrastructure would probably be out as well.

The APS doesn’t have any remote control ability, so my setup was wall → APS → Smart Plug → Pi.

I could control the smart plug via the Alexa app when I was away from home, and that worked well on the rare occasion where it froze. But this time the smart plug just decided to turn itself off and be dead.

Now I need to find some better ones, because I want one for my 3d printer as well, so that I can kill it if I check the camera and find that I am making expensive spaghetti.

obviously your challenges are more than just power backup. You need remote access/control and even those solutions become difficult when the power is out.

Yeah, I don’t understand why people bother to have backup power for an RPi. If power goes out, wouldn’t you need to have backup power for the router and modem at least – not to mention the ISP as well. All that stuff has to continue running if you’re gong to feed FlightAware.
Possibly I’m missing something here.

The ISP has monster generators at their core locations but the ISP drops when the local neighborhood node electronics backup batteries drain off and kill the link to the house. I hold up the network electronics [router, modem} with UPS power but there is always a weak link somewhere that you have no control of.

Speaking for myself, the only thing that you are missing is that I had the UPS sitting around unused. My server on the on the other side of the garage was already on its own UPS and this one was just sitting under a shelf.

Since my Pi, the amp I’m using with it, and my Flightfeeder are all on the other side of the garage, a “free” UPS was cheaper than buying a power strip for those 3 power supplies.

I’m probably not the test case.

Yep you are right, it’s useless to have backup power for a Pi when you don’t protect the entire chain.

My place is fully automated to a large extent and that implies that all equipment needed for that is UPS protected.

I have a total of 6 UPS systems in my house, not only to keep the systems up but also to protect the equipment against power surges. I’ve saved some harddisks that way in my NAS systems. All switches are protected as well. The overhead capacity of the UPS systems is used to keep the Pi’s alive.

Luckily we live in a place where outages are the exception but better safe then sorry :innocent::wink:
