Jolly Good Show! How about an apple for Trigger.
My credit for my streak is having a whole house generator and being blessed in that we were in town when our internet went out for over a day… I used our mobile hotspot.
Great job! Backups on all fronts make all the difference.
The most important front is strong desire to prevent streak from breaking.
I am feeding for last 10 years (since 2015), but lack the desire to prevent streak from breaking, so all of my 4 Pis have streaks shorter than 4 years. Some are even shorter than 1 year. ![]()
You have been blessed! Good work on your part too!
Lost mine when I was away from home my power brick fell out of the vertical Power strip. Found it dead when I got home 2 days later. Its Not kind that way. Also, I started a year earlier, but had the old station ID and when I moved rooms in the house it reset to the new and didnt connect the two. Ask FA if they could tie them back together, but no
bad luck with the vertical power strip. A velcro strap might hold it in place if you can’t go horizontal with the power.
Good suggestion, It was taken care of that Sunday when I got home from our Camping trip.
Whew! Almost blew it today at 2243 days!
I am away for work and there was a big windstorm back home last night that caused power to go out several times (for unknown periods).
Both of my feeders are on one 1500w battery backup, and I have a server running several VMs on another. The VMs include a DNS server, email server, three web servers, an FTP server and some home automation stuff.
Apparently when the power came back on for good, something didn’t come up correctly and it killed internet at the house. I could see that my feeder was down via uptimerobot.com, but none of my remote access methods worked at all - I couldn’t even get Alexa to cycle the smart plug that the feeder lives on.
Luckily, my wife is a trooper and helped me out when she got home from work - I had her go out into my server room (coincidentally, she calls it “her garage”) and power cycle the router. That didn’t help, probably because my DNS server was still down, so I just had her (eek!) hold the power button on the server until all the lights went out and then power it back on. It takes that thing about 20 minutes to start up and launch/sync all of the other servers, and that got internet working for her (and got my remote access back), but the feeder was still down.
I realized that with working internet, I could access Alexa, so I was able to turn the smart plug off and back on. That got me up and running after only 18.5 hours of downtime!
I don’t know why “the streak” is important, but….there you have it.
Good result. Just in the nick of time!
Well, I got to 10 unbroken years, but will shortly be closing my feed down.
I enjoyed tracking, but don’t have any motivation for it now.
Cheers all.
10 years is pretty cool. If your setup is easy to reach, why not try out adsb.im. It gives you easy access to try out new things or feed several feeders. Also there is an option to activate skystats. It gives you interesting insights into routes, type of aircrafts and “interesting” planes.
@anon26942074 I’ll be sorry to see you go. Remember the wild west days of 10 years ago building antennas and cavity filters? Good luck with whatever you do next.
@triggers yes, I remember fighting those bl***y useless co-co antennas, never did get one to work.
I’m 70+ now and don’t much care for climbing ladders to get on the roof, so next fine day will be taking down my antenna as it’s old now and really needs replacing, along with the rest of the hardware.
Coverage in my area is good nowadays, so won’t be missed that much.
Cheers (and look after that broom
!)
@anon26942074 My brother still has one of my co-co antennas on his roof and working great after 8+ years.
The broom has had a couple of new heads this year! Regards, Dave
