Was there a problem with this flight to rome? about 3 hours into this flight over the atlantic, equipment u-turned decended to FL90/270kts and appeared to head back to Kennedy.

Looks like just two erroneous positions, possibly from another American flight ending in 236 or with a number close to 236 that was mistyped by ATC.
