Each to their own and one size definitively does not fit all.

If all I want to do is put up a new ADSB receiver or AIS receiver then ADSB.im is by far the fastest and simplest way. Five minutes to burn a new microSD card and run up the Pi.

Add the site name, location and then tick which aggregators you want to feed and add UUID if necessary; all on the GUI. I can also set up Zerotier or Tailscal again very simply.

Start to feeding in about 10-15 minutes.

No, I cant do anything else because I know nothing about containers and I don’t want to. I only use this where it is just an appliance and hence I don’t need to know anything about containers or lower level instructions.

I haven’t tried ADSB and AIS on the same Pi yet. Maybe this weekend.

I still have Pis running Raspian and Ubuntu and X86 machines also running Ubuntu.

This sounds a lot harder for me.

For this very reason people are using Piaware SD Card image and Flightradar24’s Pi24 inage, and in past were using @jprochazka 's adsb project image (no more available now).

Using .deb packages from repository, or using a native script setup, prevents the software bloat and configuration complexities often caused by static, pre-packaged images or Docker containers.

A cleaner implementation relies entirely on a script-based installation that is run natively on top of a fresh install of standard Linux distributions like Raspberry Pi OS.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who doesn’t own a Raspberry Pi and runs things on an aging PC with a Debian-based OS (LMDE), this discussion hits close to home.

Since PC-compatible Raspberry Pi OS builds are no longer available, sticking to a clean, native Debian/LMDE base and building what’s needed via scripts has been the most reliable way to keep 24/7 operations running smoothly without any bloat. It’s great to see everyone sharing such diverse and practical approaches! YUKIO

What software bloat and configuration complexities are you referring to in ADSB.IM?

Just for fun i am running ADSB.im on a PiZero 2W feeding two aggregators and using tailscale remote access. Yes, I too am surprised it works.

I don’t know what you mean. To what scripts are you referring?

Both the Flightaware image and the ADSB.IM image are self contained and don’t require scripts.

Meanwhile, running all this on an aging PC without a Pi feels like watching two sports cars argue over tires, while I’m cruising in an old reliable truck! But hey, that’s the beauty of Linux—everyone gets to build their own custom ride. YUKIO

This relates to installation on x86_64 PC, and not RPi.

For RPI either PiawareSD Card image or piaware package install on Raspberry Pi OS are cleanest and easy solution. No Docker needed.

The only thing I did was this: Clicked the gear icon > site configuration > device commands > upgrade and restart Piaware > send. Done!

Hardware = RPi4B + PiAware (SD Card) Image.

Have you tried ADSB.IM?

For a system where you don’t have a need to fiddle it is the quickest and most simple solution.

The docker is completely transparent and you don’t need any docker knowledge. Everything is completed using the GUI including selecting which aggregators you want to feed and the appropriate ID you want to use.

It also makes it easy to add AIS or ACARS or VDL etc.

I talked a friend on the other side of the country through a setup and she wouldn’t know a Linux prompt if it jumped out and bit her on the bum.

It is clearly not a solution for someone who wants the next release before it is even released.

Please, at least try it before you criticize it.
