the sydney outbound flight has been canceled two days in a role (22nd and 23rd), 22nd plane flew back empty, anyone knows why??

The SFO flight today still went out with empty seats so they were able to reaccom everyone.
Happened to my friend a few weeks ago. Was booked SYD-LAX-ORD, SYD-LAX canceled due to mechanical, was rebooked SYD-SFO-ORD.
