Top hat on FA ADS-B Antenna for lowering DB of local aircraft

In an attempt to lower the DB of local aircraft I was wondering if anyone had ever placed a metal plate over the top of the antenna. This would attenuate very strong signals from aircraft passing directly (or nearly directly) overhead and yet allow distant signals to be heard from the sides. Maybe about 6 or 8 inches (15 cm to 20 cm) would be more than enough I think. May have to play with the diameter or mesh of the dish/disk.
