So. After running the optimize-gain command, I set my gain to 42.1
I now get this
Percentage of strong messages: 0.357
Signal: -14.4
Noise: -32.0
Is this better, or am I still not on the best set up?

It’s quite difficult to say as your local circumstances will be particular to your receiver. If you haven’t already, install graphs1090 and monitor what happens over longer periods. Also look at what happens to very local signals to see if they get lost as aircraft come close. You don’t have a very high level of strong signals so it’s probably OK.
If you are receiving signals out to your radio horizon (use heywhatsthat to check) then you probably don’t need more gain. ADS-B is not difficult to receive as the transmitters are quite high power, so it’s just a matter of finding a gain setting that’s not so high it’s overloading the receiver or so low that you are losing long range signals. The range of acceptable values is probably quite wide for most locations, and there might or might not be one particular value that is obviously best. It’s just a matter of observing over time and tweaking.
looking on the slide looks like something like 29.7 and 32.8 would be better. More messages, more positions, more aircraft.
I would play around with that for at least a few hours each and check again.
Is it possible to still add the gain command to piaware like this? Add Gain Control To Dump1090-fa – Fuzz The Pi Guy this version no longer works
The above linked site used my script for Piaware SD Card Image Version 5.0.
Since this version of piaware was substantially changed from ver 6.2 onwards, I have deleted that script.
I have however posted a new script which works with ver 6.2 and later. Please visit my Github site linked below to find it:
That’s brilliant. Thank you!
Hello all I made some improvements at least I think of the optimize gain script by (abcd567) above that may help you all to see the different gains in a better way. I wanted to take a moment to say I couldn’t of made thees improvements without the help of the people who made the original scripts and I hope this benefits the community.
Please take a look and leave feedback from the following thread:
B1N9’s ADSB Scripts & Tools (GAIN_CHECK_v3.py) - FlightAware / ADS-B Flight Tracking - FlightAware Discussions
If you have any issues please leave those comments on the above thread or the github itself as I probably will not see them otherwise
… and then we have even more options:
FIX_CRC=“yes”
PHASE_ENHANCE=“no”
OVERSAMPLE=“yes”
AGGRESSIVE=“no”
“percentage of strong messages: 0”
does this mean I’m just receiving poorly overall? hah
It’s a very good indication that you have room to turn up the gain on the system receive.
