The USB stick is no longer sending data

I’m having the problem that my Raspberry Pi has started to stop sending data quite often now. A reboot fixes it straight away, but that’s not really a solution to my problem.

With lsusb I saw last time the stick was missing. At the moment I use the “AirNav Radar FlightStick”. Before I hat the same problems with the “Nooelec NESDR Mini 2”.

Do I need to reinstall something, clear the cache, or try a completely different USB drive? My problem is that after a while, no more data is being sent.

The most common cause is a soft power supply (also the easiest to test).

Try an alternative USB power supply and see if your station improves.

Does your version of RPi have multiple USB ports available that you are using? There could be 2 versions of USB ports colored black and blue. It’s possible from my experience that your Flightstick or Mini 2 are not happy with the USB version that it is attached to. I have seen that issue cause power drops. Stranger things!

I have a 12V car power adapter with four USB ports for a stand-alone solar PV system. I’ve now reconnected the Raspberry Pi to a standard USB power supply for the time being. I can well imagine that the power output dropped off a bit when too many devices were connected. I’m now installing a 12V car socket in parallel and using a 12V to USB adapter from the manufacturer ‘Anker’. That should keep the voltage and current more stable. The Pi I’m using is the Pi 3B.

The Raspberry Pi just stopped sending data again. After a restart, everything was working fine again. I’ve now plugged the USB stick into a different port and removed the short USB extension cable between the stick and the Raspberry Pi to rule that out as the cause of the problem.

That sounds like a good test. I found that direct connecting a USB dongle to the Rpi or USB hub can cause the connection to experience mechanical stresses that can cause the connection to go intermittent. I like to use a short flexible USB cable between the dongle and the USB power source to remove any mechanical loading of the connection.

I disconnected the cable between the Raspberry Pi and the USB stick, and I haven’t had any more glitches since then. So that seems to have been the cause.
