When already halfway to MCI why would this flight divert all the way back to DAL? As far as I can tell, it wasn’t weather related?

Probably mechanical - better equipped for repairs at DAL.
Could have “spiraled” down to TUL and paid AA for repairs if it was mechanical, but that would make too much sense.
