Suggestion for FA site coverage map: [x] 1090 [x] 978

Hi,

This is a possible suggestion for the FA site coverage map that shows station locations.

FlightAware ADS-B Coverage Map

The page currently has filters for these options:
FlightFeeder
PiAware
Radarcape

Note: I believe the Radarcape is probably historical from early Radarcape “direct feeder” days. It does not seem to identify Radarcape direct feeders any longer. It might be worth removing that option possibly.

Suggestion:

Consider adding two new filters as below. Both would default to enabled.

1090 ADS-B (or whatever you want to call it)
978 UAT

This would allow people to view the sites in an area and then deselect the 1090 to view only 978 UAT sites. Yesterday in another message thread I was viewing sites online and realized it is a bit tricky to quickly identify those feeding 978 UAT. I had to manually select a station and then look at the “Feeder Mode: Mode-S (1090 MHz) and UAT (978 MHz)” to spot the 978 UAT feeders.

FA clearly already has the data needed for this. Adding a 1090 and 978 filter to the page would be VERY useful and might help to increase interest in additional 978 coverage. The status of the 1090/978 would simply be based on the “Feeder Mode: Mode-S (1090 MHz) and UAT (978 MHz)”. It would indicate a station is configured for 1090/978, but of course not that they are actually receiving and uploading 1090/978.

If not too difficult to do this, I believe it would be a valuable feature.

Thank you,
-Dan

Hi,

I should have added that I am aware that the FA coverage map showing historical traffic does already have ADS-B and ADS-B UAT filters, but that is not useful for identifying individual sites. Filtering just for 0-10,000 feet is not that useful since most UAT traffic is well below that most of the time.

My suggestion would be helpful for viewing actual 978 sites and where you might actually see more typical low-altitude 978 traffic.

Note: It is interesting to filter on ADS-B UAT with altitude=20,000 - 30,000 and see all the tracks from those “UAT” (cough, cough..) aircraft obviously on both 1090 and 978 at the same time. There are even some at FL 400+.

-Dan

I agree and I really like to see this as well. I know, I know, not many on UAT. BUT…for few of us GA fliers in rural areas, this is important data to have. I only have UAT and I am tracking a flight at 40Kft right now. I get on average 10-20 aircraft and 1k-2+k position reports a day. So yes, it would be great to see which of the sites on the coverage map are 978 and which are 1090.
