Time since you last saw a message from that aircraft (i.e. the age of the data shown)

Assume then that low numbers give more accurate position and on occasions when I see a highish number eg 30, that would be effectively 30 seconds late with position and at aircraft speeds that could be 5 miles out.

Right. Anything that’s >1 means that you can’t reliably hear the aircraft (due to range, etc), as Mode S transponders are regularly transmitting. The aircraft will get removed from the list entirely at 60.
