SkyAware v2 — A Fresh Look for Local ADS-B Tracking
Hey FlightAware friends,
Yesterday I rolled out SkyAware v2 across all my Raspberry Pis — and wow, it’s a game-changer. If you’re still using the classic SkyAware interface, it’s time to upgrade and see what you’ve been missing.
What is SkyAware v2?
SkyAware v2 is FlightAware’s modernized frontend for local ADS-B visualization. It’s built on top of dump1090-fa and offers:
-
Map layers: switch between terrain, satellite, and street views
-
Range rings: visualize coverage radius in real time
-
Aircraft filters: by altitude, type, squawk, and more
-
Responsive UI: works beautifully on desktop, tablet, and mobile
-
No extra setup: just update
dump1090-faand the frontend files
How I deployed it
I updated my master Pi with the latest dump1090-fa, then pushed the new /var/www/html/index.html (~41 KB) to all my other Pis using rsync and ssh. Now every Pi serves the same sleek SkyAware v2 interface — no more legacy UI!
Why it matters
SkyAware v2 isn’t just prettier — it’s more functional, more flexible, and gives you better situational awareness. Whether you’re tracking traffic, debugging coverage, or just admiring the skies, it’s a serious upgrade.
Don’t get left behind in v1 — the skies have moved on. ![]()
