SkyAware remote IP Address /Port Forwarding

I can see my skyaware at 10.0.0.99 but not from my ISP Internet address
http://xx.xx.xxx.xx
I’ve tried http://xx.xx.xxx.xx/dump1090-fa/ but that does not work
when I last had a flighaware receiving 3 years ago.

I had to download an Ap on my phone for advanced settings to get into the
Cable Modem and added port 8080 TCP/UCP

I’m using a Raspberry pi 3B via wifi

Any direction would be appreciated

Have you done the same thing now? This is called Port Forwarding.

Ah yes, thats exactly what I said.
I downloaded an Ap onto my phone in order to get
into my Modem’s “advanced settings” and port 99
to piaware

The solution was simple,
I added Port 8080 TCP / UDP and
it did not work untill I recycled the modem
by powering it off and on over 60 seconds.
Its now working as
http://xx.xx.xxx.xx:8080/

Note that by simply port forwarding you allow anyone who knows/guesses/clicks on your IP address (+port*)to access your ‘local’ SkyAware page.

At a minimum this would enable that same person to tie the IP address to an exact geographic location.

I checked, thats not correct.
Nothing shows up with just the IP address, it needs /8080 after it

Sure - it needs ip:port. The point still stands, and clicking on the IP addresses in the link I gave in my previous post does the same thing.

The page is open to everyone with an internet connection.

I just tried it from several computers and could not see anything with
http://xx.xx.xxx.xx:port/
or http://xx.xx.xxx.xx/:port/
or http://xx.xx.xxx.xx/port/
So, how do you get to see a FlightAware at an IP address without knowing
the IP port number ?

This entire thread started because

which, together with the post title including the phrase Port Forward made me assume that you want to access your SkyAware page from your external/WAN/ISP allocated external IP address (as opposed to your local internal-only IP address.

You then said

which I assumed was code for “I can access my SkyAware page using my external IP address and the port, because I’ve punched a hole through my router by port forwarding.”

You now say

Assuming all those xx’s mean your external IP address, then port forwarding on your router hasn’t worked properly, or your router is not properly ‘hairpinning’. Note that only the first attempt is valid syntax.

Tangentially

You guess. Or use Shodan (see the link previously provided). Or do what most bots/script kiddies/‘hackers’ do: run a script against an IP address to find out which ports are open/alive, and then investigate only those - this takes only seconds to perform, which you can try for yourself using any online port scanner site.

If you log in to your flightaware account then go to stats page you can view the skyaware anyware map without any port forwarding. This is easiest way.

From memory this was not available three years ago when @roger555 first used the system.

If you want the old system the router settings need either port 8080 forwarded to ip address or mac of device running piaware on local network or
port (any port number you choose that is not being used elsewhere) redirect to port 8080 on ip address or mac address on local network.
