This photo is from John Brown University’s airport from the early 20th century. The airport was located over the Arkansas/Oklahoma State Line and served as a training spot for the Civillian Pilot Training Program in the late 1930s to expand our nation’s pool of pilots. After the U.S. entered World War II, the CPTP morphed into the War Training Service and trained roughly 175 pilots for combat flying. By the 1950s the CPTP/WTS scaled down their training and the facilty began transitoning into Siloam Springs’ first airport which opened on on May 25, 1963.
