My neighbor gave me a discone antenna that he has never used that was for a scanner within the range of 25-1300 mhz. Has stainless steel radials amd a uhf female connector. Is it possible to use that antenna? Thanks in advance!
On the plus side, it’s probably better than an indoor mag mount.
on the down side, it’ll be just as good at picking up out-of-band signals that you don’t want.
If you are in a rural location, this may not matter, but if you are close to a lot of RF noise, the chance of overloading the receiver is pretty high.
If you’ve got it, put it up for sure. Compare your stats with the stations around you, enter your location into heywhatsthat.com and see how your range compares. See if the bug bites and start thinking of upgrades.
