Purpose traffic to riffy.hou.flightaware.com:6417

Could anybody explain the need and purpose of UDP traffic to riffy.hou.flightaware.com:6417 to me please? IP address 206.253.80.200 translates into riffy.hou.flightaware.com
My attempts to get this question answered through Internet sources failed unfortunately.
A firewall blocks such traffic currently and I am not aware of any negative side effects so far.
Any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Multilateration raw data. The exact host and port will change on each connection.

If the data is blocked, multilateration won’t work for you.

Thank you for the explanation. I am worried if host and port change on each connection the multilateration communication scheme might be considered somehow limited firewall-friendly as I would have to allow all hosts and ports …
However, I happily and gratefully noted the technical details that fully answered my question. I am considering the topic closed. Thank you again.

If you want to narrow down the rules, the current configuration is:

  • UDP ports 4999 - 19999 inclusive
  • hosts from the list of addresses that piaware.flightaware.com resolves to

note that this may change over time (in particular we periodically add and remove hosts)

Much appreciated, thank you.
