Curious - have any of you running a Piaware setup noticed that it is periodically pinging Baidu (aka Chinese Google)? I have a Ubiquiti network that has fairly detailed activity logs. I recently noticed Baidu had been accessed by the Pi. So i set up a rule to block access. I’ve gotten notices in the activity log that the rule has blocked Piaware from pinging Baidu after I created the rule, so it’s still trying. I can’t see that there has been any loss in functionality or performance of Piaware, so I’m wondering what the Baidu access is all about. I’m concerned about any device on my network accessing anything in China. Any clues appreciated.
I run Pi-holes so I can easily check - There’s not a single request in my logs for any connection to Baidu.
I see access to Baidu and PPTV (Chinese streaming service) but can’t see what app on the Pi is actually pinging either. However, I only this on the ADSB Pi. I have a separate UAT Pi and it does not access either
Perhaps use a different/new microSD card and do a full install via the Flightaware OS download or a new Bookworm install and then install Piaware, Dump1090-fa and Graphs1090. At some point, your current system was likely compromised. It happens and you were fortunate to find it.
The people and apps doing this are slime and rather than trying to identify the nefarious program, usually the best option is a complete reinstall. From experience, there is likely a stealthy second app watching for the presence of the primary culprit app and will reinstall the primary (with a different name) if the primary is deleted. Old windows trick moved to Linux.
