I have rpi-4 running ADS-B on Bookworm since about 2 years, no issues
unit runs on PoE, few days ago, after an electrical storm PoE switch (as well as numerous other electronic devices in the building) failed, I’ve plugged power into USB, unit powered (with some noise…), removed PoE HAT, noise stopped, unit booted, runs OK
PoE switch is definitely dead, haven’t as yet tested PoE HAT with another source, running on mains power supply, all good
BUT, just noticed temperature, the unit seems to run significantly warmer ?
any ideas why, should I be concerned, or ? just curious…
external (summer) temperature has been quite cool last few days (Sydney Aus)
with respect - taking the cooling fan off, the temp will rise.
You can add/replace the fan, add a bigger heatsink or simply tipping the Pi on its side so the PCB is vertical will all help to reduce the temp.
The Pi4 will throttle its self if it gets too hot, so there is no great risk.
Personly, I like large, slow fans for good air movement with low noise. For choice, I use a 12V maglev fan running on 5V. It will last years and is virtually silent.
I’ve only noticed I have fan with PoE board, and, don’t have a fan otherwise…
also, noticed the other board has provision for a fan, but, not included - and, none are available locally for that case/board, MulticompPro case
I might take the upper part off - can’t really tip sideways, as it’s in a box on the wall, with two holes to feed in antenna and ethernet, one each hole, that gets in the way
