Just listened to the last recording, “Western Pacific Region, NorCal TRACON”.
This freaking woman iced up, lost her airspeed, didn’t even know if she had pitot heat or an alternate static source, and then, after the controllers basically fix the problems for her, said she wanted to pass up several alternate airports for her original destination because"that’s where my car is"!!! Holy crap. Someone should have a serious chat with that lady!
Wow, I’ve just listened to a few more of these recordings. “Great Lakes Region2, Cleveland Center” is scary. Pilot has serious hypoxia and is looped out of his mind. Very strange to hear. Makes a strong case for every pilot to go to an altitude chamber for training.
Still have to go with the Southwest Region. That guy at LCH was just great… and the lady, I feel like finding and just giving a hug to! Great job on both sides.
BL.
The scariest thing about these recordings is the lack of adequate instruction!
Instrument rated pilot who doesn’t know what an LDA is? Checkout in a complex airplane like a Bonanza without knowledge of pitot heat, alternate static source or even windshield defrost?
As an AIGI myself I’m appalled!
Agreed on the training. So far Ive only listened to the student pilot that couldn’t land. I keep thinking, where is her instructor during all of this?
