N789DA In Water

A short time ago while listening to ATC, a call went out on Guard 121.5,and several aircraft immediately switched finally an aircraft picked them up,they lost their engine and went down in the water at Arrowhead Lake Somebody else may post the link to get it right.I can’t be sure,it was MEMPHIS Center who put out the call as im in North Alabama and military aircraft jumped in on Huntsville Freq at the request of Memphis Center.

Problem is… I can think of 3 places off the top of my head where there is an Arrowhead Lake. Can you be more specific?

Somebody put avgas in the Twinstar?

I believe the DA-40 burns Avgas. It’s the four seat single.

Aircraft in question for this post is a DA-40 Diamond Star (4 place single as stated above) and it burns 100LL AvGas.

To go a little off topic, but still with the post:
The Diamond DA-42 Twin Star burns diesel, but since it has the same over all properties, Jet-A can be burned instead. (Hence why all the fuel trucks you see at airports are super old but still running great is because Jet-A, for explaining purpose, is more or less 50% diesel & 50% kerosene. This is a very clean burning mixture and cleans out these engines very, very nicely.) If you ever take a look at a DA-42, there are stickers EVERYWHERE about it using Jet-A1 because of fears about it being loaded with AvGas by someone just not knowing much about it.

And every DA-42 owner is secretly hoping that such a fueling error will occur and soon so he can get someone else to pay for replacing his orphaned Thielert engines!

It is a shame what happened. I was quite surprised when I heard about Thielert…

When first announced I thought the DA-42 with Thielerts was brilliant and a breakthrough for small GA multis. The collapse of Thielert was surprising yes, but any company can suffer losses and need to regroup. It was the flawed decisions of the insolvency commissioner assigned to the case by the court (e.g. not supporting warranty claims at all, not providing parts in a cost effective manner, etc.) that truly put paid to the company and lead to Diamond stopping construction of the aircraft.

I hope that the new Austro engine that Diamond has developed in conjunction with Daimler and Steyr-Puch can effectively replace the Thielert engines and allow Diamond to return to production, something they announced last week but hasn’t been verified. But that still won’t help the poor souls who gambled on the Thielerts and lost.

My bad! I mis-read the flight info. Agreed on sentiments regarding Thielert.
