MILLARD, MO. – A chartered plane made an emergency landing in the Heartland Friday afternoon.

Just before 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon the Kansas City FAA tower contacted Kirksville Regional Airport about an emergency landing for a Gulfstream jet. Airport officials tell KTVO that the windshield of the plane became delaminated in flight and caught on fire. The pilot told local officials there were flames and smoke coming off the windshield at 45,000 feet in the air.

Local officials say one of the heating element in the windshield caught fire. The crew was able to turn off the heating mechanism before landing, and the windshield was not on fire when the plane touched down.

Authorities at Kirksville Regional said there was one passenger on board the plane when it landed, but they didn’t know who it was and the person remained on the aircraft while it sat on the tarmac.

They also told KTVO that they did not know where the flight originated or where it was headed, just that it had to make an emergency landing and another chartered jet flew in to pick up the passenger.
