August 11, 2010 - Frank “Scoop” Vessels III was reportedly killed in a plane crash this afternoon.
Vessels and a friend, Sam Cannell, were returning to Redding, California, from a fishing trip when the plane went down near Burns, Oregon, according to sources.
Scoop was one of the leading figures in American Quarter Horse racing. A former AQHA president, he was the owner of Vessels Stallion Farm at Bonsall, California, which stands all-time leading sire First Down Dash.
Vessels is survived by wife, Bonnie, and sons Bryan, Colt and Kash.
Mr. Vessels was also a well known off-road racer, and previous winner of both the BAJA 500 and BAJA 1000 races.
