Hi. On flightaware.com radar I can see mlat traffic which constantly moves and return nice smooth tracks but the same aircraft on piaware maps don’t move instantly even when well within my receiver’s range, the lag between moves can be 5 seconds or more.
Is it possible to get mlat traffic in piaware to have much smoother moving like it does on FlightAware and not the delayed updating?
On the website maps we actually interpolate over slightly delayed data specifically for the sake of a smooth animation (and we also fit a curve to the points to smooth out turns). The continuous movement is because of that interpolation, it’s not actually receiving more data points. On SkyAware you’re seeing the up to date raw data immediately (+/- a few seconds) with no interpolation/animation or curve fitting.
Having done interpolation and animation on military modeling and simulation wargame systems, the CPU usage would increase significantly. My stuff was on SGI Unix systems and the math required to make things like smooth curves, and fast updates limited other desirable functionality. Now, do all that for all the planes on these displays …
Not going to work on the small pi’s at all. Amazing that the small systems can do as well as they do now. Good design decisions by the Software Team. Best to keep it simple and reliable. Pretty and fancy is the enemy of reliability.
