As a matter of fact, it is the law that if a flight number isn’t attached to a specific operator than it is suppose to have an abnormality enroute at least once or twice a month.
whats an abnormality?
Something that isn’t normal like an engine failure, smoke in the cockpit, a cop turning down a donut, or polite service from the DMV.

They’re teasing you because you didn’t say WHOSE flight 974 it was. Give the airline and there’s a good chance you’ll get a straight answer.
Also, it’s hit-or-miss on associating a diverted flight on FA with an actual news story or NTSB incident report. You’d do about as well as anybody by doing a diligent Google News search – with well-chosen keywords – and then try the local media at the departure, arrival, and divert cities.
With a little deductive logic and some checking here on good ol’ FA one would be able to guess (and correctly I might add) it was a UA flight from IAD to GVA. As to why…who knows
