How to request flight following

If you’re VFR enroute and you want flight following, when ATC is contacted, are you required to state the phrase “request flight following” or similar phraseology, or is it enough to just advise that you’re at a VFR altitude ex:
“N100XX at 7500 feet, 10miles south of KPAO, enroute to KCMA”, and it will be assumed that you want flight following?

You’ll need to request it. If you just state the above they will ask you your intentions.
