At 12:30 p.m. EDT today, received LNA, and connected between Antenna and Heltec V3 board at 12:45 p.m. EDT
C$5.80
RF Chip=SBB5089 - NF=4
Let’s hope it improves reception.
As for powering all these boards, I have been using this now:
They have a mix and match, like USB-C and Micro USB etc. Also 3, like the one on the link, or 2. Very handy and saves power cubes.
These are for power only, no signal.
Yes. That is obvious.
Was there a sentence after that?
The LNA did not improve reception, it totally blocked reception.
As I have received SAW filters for 403MHz and 433MHz, I added the 403MHz filter between LNA & Heltec. Still no reception. Then I changed the location of 403MHz filter to between Antenna and LNA, and reception was restored.
It seems my location has high RF interference, and unless that interference is removed First (by placing filter immediately after Antenna), the LNA amplifies the interference so much that it overwhelms the Heltec.
The downside is that now I am receiving only 400 MHz signals (Tianqi & Fossa) and no more signals from 436MHz satellites (KOSAR).
I am now waiting for delivery of combiners/splitters. Once I receive these, I will connect both the 403MHz and 433MHz filters in parallel as shown in diagram below (SETUP-1).
This is where I always place the filter when using a wideband LNA.
In the attached bar-chart, please see the right-most bar. It is after I made the final arrangement last night, and it is only about 12hrs progress.
Antenna >> 403MHz Filter >> LNA >> Receiver (Heltec)
Probably not.
You first tried with the filter between the LNA and the receiver - the filter should have attenuated the out of band signals enough to prevent front end overload. You could try adding two filters between the LNA and receiver.
More likely is that it’s the LNA that’s saturated and no signal is getting through. The chip claims to go to 6GHz and the closest transmitter is probably your own WiFi.
One interesting point about the SBB5089 is that the manufacturer says it’s discontinued.
What is being offered on fleabay, Ali, etc. may be old stock, out of spec rejects or just fake chips.
Very good!
I “learned” about placing the filter between the antenna and the LNA when I replaced the RTL-SDR Blog Triple Filter LNA with the no-name orange LNA.
I think I mentioned it earlier, in that case, not even the FA light blue filter was able to handle it. It took the FA dark blue filter. Performance improvement with the no-name orange LNA was substancial.
My ADS-B setup is pretty much “frozen” now, no additional improvements possible IMO. The only thing I’m monitoring is if the same problem I had with the no-name orange filter, used in the TinyGS setup, occurs with the ADS-B setup. I’m talking about the built-in rechargeable battery in the no-name orange LNA that I suspect caused RFI and disrupted the Wi-Fi.
The TinyGS setup is “frozen” as well.
My focus now is on Meshcore. Planning to build a couple of repeaters.
Keep in mind, I “don’t do roofs and towers”, it’s all indoors or ground level.
Long ago, I have learned that the RF noise at my location is so strong that it saturates the front end LNA of the FA dongle, but forgot it.
About 10 years ago, when I replaced DIY 1/4 wavelength antenna by FA Antenna, reception dropped to near zero, till I added a FA light blue Filter. The dongle was FA ProStick with builtin LNA
Regarding the filter first or amplify first question, I think the RTL-SDR Triple filtered 1090 MHz LNA had the right idea. The first filter was an FM notch to get rid of strong FM broadcast signals, followed by an LNA and then followed by additional BPF and amps. I had one of those, but unfortunately it gave up the ghost after a few years operation. And you cannot buy a replacement.
I now use the Nooelec dual 1090/978 MHz filter-LNA. It works, but I don’t think as well as the RTL-SDR Triple filter device. It seems that range has been reduced somewhat.
I have a “FM Band Stop Filter” which I connected between antenna & LNA before I received the SAW 403MHz & 433MHz Filters, but the reception of Satellite signals remained zero.
I feel the interference is from other communication signals, mainly Cellular signals. as there are many celluar antennas on top of my high-rise building and surrounding high-rise buildings. Another posibility is my WiFi router, which is located in the same room as the indoor λ/4 groundplane antenna tuned to 410MHz.
Yeah, I guess what’s going to work best for ADS-B reception depends on the interference source (FM broadcast, or cellular or both). Around here cellular doesn’t really work very well, so it’s not an interference problem!
Around here, Cellular is very strong, and FM does not work very well:
My querry to Google:
Are there any FM Broadcast Transmitters located in Mississauga, ON, Canada?
Google AI Response:
Yes, Mississauga has one low-power FM broadcast transmitter, specifically CFRE Radio, which is the campus radio station of the University of Toronto (Mississauga Campus), operating at 91.9 MHz with an ultra-low power output of 0.3 watts, but full-power commercial FM signals serving the area generally transmit from the CN Tower and regional radio masts located in neighboring Toronto, rather than dedicated commercial FM broadcasting towers inside Mississauga itself.

Found something half the price of Heltec. Can this be used for tinyGS?

Not by itself, this is just the radio part. As the first capture says, it needs to be used in conjunction with a microcontroller. A “microcontroller” could also be a computer, if portability is not a requirement.
First day’s performance after adding 403MHz Filter + LNA.
The entire reception was only the 401MHz packets. Not a single 436MHz packet recieved.
Waiting to receive splitter / combiner to add 433MHz Filter in parallel with the 403MHz filter.
May be it can be used like “Pi-Hat” with a Raspberry Pi???
