Hi all, I’ve been feeding for a while and would like some feedback on my stats.
I can provide more info if anyone is interested.
Thanks!

You should consider reducing the gain.
The number of messages > -3dBFS (in the first graph) should not exceed 5%
But don’t set it too low, it can reduce your range.
Beside that it depends on what hardware you are using, especially the antenna can be a game changer.
Your have (only just) the second highest stats in your area, so you must be doing something right.
First question: What is YOUR greatest interest?
Do you want: the highest message count, the highest plane count, the greatest range or local flights with no gaps?
Increasing your range is often at the expence of local message/tracking and vica versa.
Wow thanks! I wanted to improve range but not sure if that’s possible.
I have the FA antenna in the attic, a Nooelec LNA straight after it then coax rg6 to the basement Raspberry Pi 3b+.
Playing with the gain at the Pi may sqeeze a bit more out.
Haveing your LNA at the top negates the need for better coax
Raising the antenna and getting it above local obstacles (if there are any) will probably give you the best chance of increasing your performance.
Looks like your gain increased in July. Maybe try resetting your max gain to 38 or 40. Seems you are getting good distance and the short range is 0.2. Do you suspect there is more aircraft that you aren’t seeing?
This antenna might provide you a performance upgrade if you want to go that route.

I’ll try that thanks. Do you know if the reduction of data in the NW & SE is because of my location/setup or because it’s not a popular flight path?
I am not surprised that the traffic volume is diminished to the NW but I would think you should do better in the SE Boston area. I have to wonder what physicals blocks you have with the antenna in the attic in that SE direction? Otherwise, it appears you are getting good coverage in most areas of the outer distance ring. Dropping the gain may pick up your close in aircraft count without hurting the distant aircraft.
You can simply check this by using heywhatsthat.com
There you can run an outline based on your current position and determine what the max. distance is you can “see” from your location and height based on the altitude of the aircraft.
If you need support, how to do it, let us know.
Then you know if you need to spend more efforts in technical stuff or simply convince your wife that you should move to a different location ![]()
Thank you for your answers! I have reduced the gain to 38 from auto to test (RECEIVER_GAIN=38
ADAPTIVE_DYNAMIC_RANGE=no).
I’ll let you know how it goes.
The antenna in the attic is positioned more towards the north side of the house, maybe that’s why. I’ll try to find a picture but there’s not really anything up there apart from wood, nails and normal north American shingles… Unfortunately I can’t put it on the roof!
I wanted to get the most out of my setup without anything being visible from the outside, my better half likes it that way ![]()
Heywhatsthat gives me more range south east, it must be the position of the antenna.
My MLAT map goes further, is that simply because it’s radio?
