How about a member profile list?

I’ve been noticing lately some of the posting subjects, and members seem interested in what and where other members are. Examples: What’s your home airport?, Your favorite airport, even the Flight Simmer community that posts here. Now that you have given us the ability to post comment on Airport pages and about FBO’s etc, wouldn’t it be a nice feature to have a list of all members. It could be alphabetical by screen name…BTaylor, Damiross, dbaker, skyhigh…and searchable by features on our profile page such as location, occupation, interests.

I don’t know currently how many members we have, and what percentage of them post in the forums. I would be curious to know that as well. Perhaps with a search feature available, more members would fill their profiles out more completely. (mind you, I’m not talking about taking anyones privacy away, just having the ability to search by features viewable now in any given profile that you click on.

This is one of my longer postings…wake up everyone, sorry I put you all to sleep there for a moment.

All of the features you’re looking for already exist in the Forum software and can be implemented by simply throwing a virtual switch.

I’m an admin on a Forum with ~11K members and we can search the member list by name, location, etc., etc.

We can also see who is logged in at anytime as well as the number of guests.

Where is this switch? I’m interested in finding people in my area.

What would be the purpose? If something like being able to search profiles is implemented, I hope there’s another switch to allow people to opt out of being searched.

Unlike a lot of people on Internet forums, I don’t look at every forum as another social forum like facebook or my space. There’s forums for that; this isn’t one of them in my oh-so-humble opinion.

If something like a search profile feature is turned on, I hope there’s a way to opt out of it. Using a feature like that is a good way to get spam.

It’s a switch that the forum moderators have access to.

If you are interested in locating people in your area, my suggestion is to ask for people who are in your area to contact you via private message. The Banter thread would be a good place to post it.

Well I can’t find the switch so it stays off for now.

Huh? The easyphbb forums should all have a “Memberlist” on the top. Did you guys (FA) disable it?

[quote=“dbaker in a PM”]We’ve got a little over 500k people using FA. I don’t think a member list is forthcoming due to the privacy policy.

BTW: If anyone would like to join my forum, go ahead. I’m still thinking up something interesting.

Looks like a newer version and we’d have it off anyway due to the privacy policy.

Why? Any member can see someone else’s profile anyway? No extra information would be provided in a member list. If that’s the case, doesn’t FlightAware violate the Privacy Policy when it makes other members profiles available for viewing by other members?

Seems the OP could fill out their profile. For location they say: somewhere in the stratosphere. That really narrows it down.

Which stratosphere? aren’t there a few planets around?

I don’t see the problem with it either. If you don’t want to have it viewed you don’t have to put anything in it or turn it off.

I guess I’ll start going through all the posts and look at each member and find some people in my area. I’ll see you next year.

Rather than reaching out and bugging people who don’t want to be contacted just because you happen to be in the same area, why don’t you follow my suggestion and ask people to contact you through a posting in the Banter Thread.

I like having the location listed because it shows where people are. I have my own location listed. I think it’s interesting to see where everyone is located but that DOES NOT mean I want everyone in my area contacting me just because we share a common geographical area.

Another thing: Many, if not most, people don’t have anything in their profile so a members profile list that is searchable would be meaningless.

Again, this is NOT a social forum. If you want that, go to My Space or Facebook.

Why do so many people, especially those under thirty, seem to think if there’s a forum on the Internet it must be a social (e.g. My Space) forum?

Shouldn’t take you that long:

Thanks for the reminder Wazzu

Why do people (usually over 30) think the internet is a place where they can hide?

I don’t see how sending a private message is bugging some one. You don’t have to read it if you don’t want to. One more mouse click doesn’t seem like too big of an inconvenience for most people.

I sure am glad I stirred up this thread. It was two years since the last post :smiling_imp:

I did get a great idea from demi though. Thanks for the criticism.

I think the issue is with disclosing the existence of other users who haven’t opted in.

The best way to do a location-based group is to create a flight crew for the location and let other people find it.

Good idea. Thanks.

Last time I checked, there were exactly 3,493,322,102,493,493,483 people on the Internet, give or take 493,322,102,493,493,483. You may only send out 1 invitation but you’re only one person. You send out an invitation to me, Billy Bob sends out an invitation to me, Mary Sue sends out an invitation to me, etc., pretty soon, I have a mail box full of what is spam.

Don’t forget the saying of my youth: “Don’t trust anyone under 30!” (or was that OVER thirty - I’m old so I don’t know anything anymore)

I was referring to forum members. Sorry about not specifying. There is a difference between a FA member and forum member.

Does that change anything?

That is what I was referring to as well.

What are you wearing?
