I wanna hear Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story”…
Lack of Post crash fire…
Um, I have some bad news. You might want to sit down.
Lots of interesting turns to this story.
Local story
As previously noted, no post-crash fire, so naturally fuel exhaustion is among the questions. Gusty winds that day. Pilot says his skills are “rusty.” 8)
Sketchy on details, but apparently a hard off-airport landing (Independence Road, parallel to rwy) then careened toward the car (which was glider-spotting). AC going head-on toward car, which accelerated to evade it. Right wingtip hit right rear quadrant of car. Then AC went into a field, shearing off most of left wing on a light pole. Winds probably from W, thus AC probably landing toward W and car probably facing E.
The off-airport landing, only 100 yd from rwy, suggests pilot was already having a really bad day. Turned out OK, though – he walked away. Uh…ran.
But this is really curious:
[Pilot] disappeared for several hours after the late-morning collision – prompting a multi-agency search for him – before finally turning himself in to federal aviation officials in the afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing him run from his Beechcraft Bonanza toward Boulder Municipal Airport, clutching a big black satchel.
When pilot finally turned himself in, he did not bring the satchel. Naturally, everyone wants to know what was in it. Flight bag? Yeeeaahhh maybe. But the magic moment for that question is now long gone.
Today his excuse for running away was to get his dogs home (they were in his car, parked at the airport) before the accident investigators came and monopolized his time for hours. (Leaving dogs in the car while you fly strikes me as a bad idea. So they’re OK being left at home after the accident but not normally?)
Boulder County DA is considering criminal charges for leaving the scene of an accident. Awaiting outcome of “FAA” [sic] investigation.
So rusty in fact that he forgot to put gas in the plane…
Apparently, the rust worked its way onto the control surfaces and engine…
