FlightAware Launches Support for ICAO 2012 Flight Planning

FlightAware’s flight planning and flight plan filing service has now been updated to support the new ICAO 2012 flight plan rules that go into effect on November 15, 2012.

Most of these changes are in the background, however, to continue to file RNAV and RNP capabilities, you’ll need to update your aircraft information. Here are the key changes:

  1. Communication / Navigation: You can now indicate the capability to fly LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance) approaches if you have a GPS like the Garmin 430W or 530W by selecting LPV (APV with SBAS).

  2. ACARS, CPDLC and SATCOM: If you fly with any of these systems, you can now indicate them in the appropriate section.

  3. Performance Category: You can now indicate the approach category of your aircraft (either Vref or 1.3 Vso at max landing weight).

  4. Performance Based Navigation: These capabilities now need to be explicitly defined. For most pilots who have RNAV support through a GPS certified for IFR use like the Garmin 430 or 530, you’ll select GNSS (GPS) for RNAV 5, RNAV 2 and RNAV 1 and leave RNP blank.

  5. ADS-B: If you have ADS-B support, you can now select the capabilities (e.g. 1090MHz, UAT, etc…), but you also need to provide your ICAO Address (e.g. A519D9).

  6. Aircraft Registration: If you fly under a call sign, you now need to provide your aircraft registration.

If you don’t update your aircraft you can still file flight plans, but your flight plan will indicate you have no RNAV or RNP capabilities.

Will FlightAware ever be displaying what aircraft are equipped with ADS-B ?
Maybe add a “ADS-B 1090 equipped” or “ADS-B UAT equipped” logo somewhere on the aircraft tracking page.
