The Flightaware 1090 dongle is not available. Can I use any other 1090 dongle for flightaware?
Yes that won’t be a problem as long as the dongle is capable of receiving the frequency and has the proper chip (R820T).
you can use any as suggested by @tomvdhorst
However you might have a reduced reception as the FA dongle contain a filter and an amplifier. So addtional hardware might be required
