I think you misread. The last 2 lines says it “filed flight plan to take off to the west but went east instead” which is consistent with the map.

I think you got it backwards. The flight plan was to go west. See below.

As you can see from Charlie, he filed west, but went east.

So, the map is correct, and the unfortunate souls may have paid with the ultimate price for going the wrong direction.

I did completely misread that - but I guess my main question was 1) based on the flight plan filed, were they intending to go west?

I’d guess the W in SUAW means westbound, and the next navaid (VRB) is NNW of the airport.
