I came across the FAA’s Airmen Knowledge Test Statistics page. According to the “2006 Annual Statistics for Airmen Knowledge Testing” link, of the 27,491 Private Pilot Airplane tests taken in 2006, 92.59% of applicants passed the test with an average score of 84.69.
