Hi everyone,
I’ve been developing a lightweight custom web console for monitoring VDL2 (136.975 MHz) here at SHIRAKAMI Station in northern Japan, and wanted to share a couple of screenshots of how it works.
-
Live Monitoring Mode (1st Image): Streams the latest decoded VDL2 packets and ACARS messages in real time.
-
Archive Search Mode (2nd Image): When entering a keyword, flight ID, or registration (e.g., searching for “NH” for ANA flights) into the search bar, the backend instantly queries the system journal (journalctl) to filter and extract data from the historical log archive.
It combines a clean real-time feed with a handy “flight black-box” search feature for reviewing past records. Thought some of you might find the setup interesting!

Very interesting. Another thing that would really be useful for ACARS, is if someone could decode the myriad of message formats that are used. Course, that would be a lot of work since each airline seems to have its own standard.

Haha, so true! Considering we’re essentially peeking into airline internal communications, maybe it’s safer (and more fun) not to dig too deep into every detail. Just enjoying the signals flying overhead is part of the charm!
Hi everyone,
Thanks for the great feedback and discussion on the VDL2 web console!
I’ve just pushed a small UI update to the SHIRAKAMI Station console. Based on continuous live monitoring, I cleaned up a few layout details to make it even more polished:
Still running smoothly 24/7 here in northern Japan. Happy monitoring to everyone!
