We saw a nice display on satellite imagery of numerous aircraft distrails today over the south-central US:
Can these been seen from the ground?
The reason I ask is because I find these very interesting, being a weather buff, but more so because UAL witnesses of the “UFO” reported over Gate C-17 at O’hare last month reported it making a hole in the clouds as it shot away.
Yes, these are often very apparent from the ground – the ice crystals falling out of the cloud resemble virga falling from a summer convective cloud. We had a few distrails over Wisconsin last November:
